Experience Alaska
What comes to mind when you think of Alaska? Wilderness, fishing, hunting, cold, glaciers, the northern lights — Alaska is all of these and more. In my humble opinion, it is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful states in the U.S. A place of wonder and astonishing natural splendor, it reminded me in many ways of Switzerland. Standing before its majestic mountains, vast forests, and shimmering glaciers, I couldn’t help but pause and reflect on the sheer magnificence of nature.
According to Google, Alaska has the lowest population density in the United States. Perhaps that’s because Alaska isn’t necessarily a place for everyone to live — but it is a place for everyone to visit, at least once in their lifetime. It’s an outdoor paradise, refreshingly free from ticks and snakes.
Ketchikan, Alaska, is famously known as “the salmon capital of the world.” During my visit, I watched salmon swimming upstream and learned about the different species that thrive in Alaska’s waters. Marine life extends well beyond salmon — whales can also be seen during the warmer months. I was lucky enough to go whale watching in Juneau, an experience that left me feeling humbled by the grandeur of the glaciers and surrounding forests.

Because of the state’s limited roadways, cruises are one of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to explore Alaska. Some cruise lines, like Princess Cruises, offer in-depth experiences that include extended stays in national parks such as Denali or interior destinations like Fairbanks. Even if you never leave the ship, you’ll find plenty to engage you. Cruise lines often host educational seminars for guests — during our visit to Glacier Bay, for instance, park rangers came aboard to share fascinating insights about the region.

History lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. In Skagway, I delved into stories of the Yukon Gold Rush and the resilience of those who braved harsh conditions in search of a better life. Standing in Horse Valley, I was struck by the strength and sacrifices of these early adventurers.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Alaska is a dream come true. I had my first encounters with bears and reindeer at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Anchorage, and I saw many other native species as well. While I didn’t have the chance to witness it myself, Alaska is also one of the best places in the world to view the awe-inspiring aurora borealis.

Just don’t make the mistake of leaving Alaska off your travel plans — it’s a journey that will stay with you forever.
